We’re a community-based site, so as always, we are only as good as our submissions! If you want this site to survive, please start submitting more!
In addition, we’re looking for volunteers for the site, both people who are interested in editing and those interested in promoting (the latter involves free stuff; the former a more flexible schedule). Ever overheard something that O@M-able, but didn’t have access to a computer (or were too lazy to track one down) to submit the gem immediately upon hearing it?

Our newest feature, Submit-By-Phone (courtesy of babyTel.ca), allows you to make an overheard submission just by calling a phone number and leaving a message.

So, all you roaming eavesdroppers, grab your cellphones and store this incredibly easy to remember number:

More than any other medium, our success is contingent on your engagement, and the sheer volume of participatory eavesdropping that this site has chronicled and encouraged in merely the last eight months is astounding. With over 100,000 visitors, we’ve been blessed with great success, and look forward to expanding next year.

P.S. It appears that the award shown above was stolen during post-Award celebrations at Biftek. So, if you happen to overhear someone talking about having stolen the Overheard at McGill Website of the Year award, be sure to submit it to the site, preferably with some contact information.

Because its the holiday break, and everyone is back home (meaning they are submitting less), we’re reducing the amount of quotes we’re putting up during the holiday break to one per day. We’ll be back to full output on January 3rd. As it is right now, we’ll be posting one per day, every day, at 6pm.

Some other updates:
* We added tagging, so that you can browse quotes of a particular genre (sex, alcohol, NewRez, editor’s picks, etc.). Each entry is tagged at its end, and theres an index of tags towards the bottom of the sidebar.
* We expect T-Shirts to be available in January.

Having trouble loading the page? To fix the problem, click Control-F5. We made some template changes (cleaned up the arrangements and layout, mostly), so some people wont see the main page properly because of cached files. Its prettier. We like it.

New Stuff:
* We created a News section, on the right bar, to reduce the amount of posts that are littered with this type of info. We’ll update it periodically (and might be giving it its own RSS feed).
* We added a site search engine (powered by Google) to find old entries quickly. Its a beautiful little tool: Search results appear in-page, and by pressing the little icons above the first result, you can expand to see more (we’re currently working on increasing the default number of results shown).
* You can register on OaM and have your own name for commenting. Register!
* We launched a Facebook group, to use as a mailing list for OaM News. (It’s less invasive than email…). Join up!

Coming Soon:
* You will be able to use your username to submit quotes directly from the website and get credit for your submission, and we’ll post top contributors (and hopefully average rating of their submissions)
* TShirts are expected to be available for sale in January. We will be taking pre-orders soon, as well.

As promised, we’re rolling out new features. The newest one: Post voting. Every post now has 5 stars from which you can rate how funny a quote is. Please vote liberally, as its pop-up free, and allows us to know what people find funny, as the mechanisms for feedback have been relatively minimal in the past. Voting will help us know that you think, say, the dorky prof quotes are overdone, but that you can never get enough dumb New Rez quotes. Or whatever it may be. We’ll also be able to compile “Best Rated” and “Worst Rated” quotes as well.
So, to quote Al Capone, “Vote early, and vote often!”. But he meant that for dead people as well, so ignore that part.

And, for the sake of consistency, here’s a quote to chomp down upon.

We’re Baaack!Sorry about the hiatus. For the record, blogger.com sucks. We just moved to a much more powerful system,WordPress, that is entirely hosted on our server. In other words, no more content blackouts. Plus, there are tons more little features that make the system just generally better, useful and entertaining.

You can check out old entries without having to use the Archives system, just by clicking “Next” on the bottom of every page. I know, pretty fucking intuitive, but, hey, like I said, Blogger.com sucks.

Thanks for sticking with us while we were down (strangely, traffic wasn’t sharply affected), and we look forward to rewarding your loyalty with improvements. If you notice any bugs, or have any problems with the new site, please let us know! We’re still doing some tinkering.

PS For those of you using the RSS feed, PLEASE note that the feed directory is no longer /rss.xml or /atom.xml, it is now www.overheardatmcgill.com/feed . PLEASE UPDATE YOUR FEED! Our tech guy has grandfathered-in the rss.xml and atom.xml links, so you can remain using the old feed.

There are many gems from earlier months that some of our newer readers haven’t had the chance to see, so we hope this helps navigate in a non-chronologically biased way.

We hope to unroll the following features in the coming days:

• Quote Voting: Readers will be able to vote Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down on submissions, without having to change pages, and hopefully without opening a pop-up. Among other things, this will allow us to rank quotes.
• The T-Shirt Store: Readers will be able to order a t-shirt of any of the quotes they choose for $10 per shirt. Shirt sizes available in mens’ S, M, L and XL.
